Duval County Health Department
July 13, 2007 The Duval County Health Department (DCHD) is currently involved in the contact investigation around a single case of active Tuberculosis (TB) in a person associated with a local cruise ship company. Officials of the company have been notified and are participating in the investigation. The investigation was initiated following the recent hospitalization of an individual associated with the cruise ship with active TB. The source case is under treatment and members of their immediate family have not shown any positive results. Approximately 126 people were tested, eight of which had positive skin tests. A positive test usually means that the person has been infected with the TB germ. It does not necessarily mean that the person has active TB disease. TB is a disease that is spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. Other tests, such as an x-ray or sputum sample are needed to determine if the person has active TB disease. TB can be easily cured through proper medical treatment. For additional information about TB contact the Duval County Health Department Center for Specialized Pulmonary Services at 630-3336. |
