The Division of Nutrition & Chronic Disease Prevention (NCDP) develops and implements programs to enhance dietary patterns of the public. The goal of NCDP is to maximize the food and nutrition resources for the purpose of improving the health of Duval County residents, with special emphasis on high - risk and disadvantage populations. Good nutrition is essential to maintaining healthy bodies.The Division of Nutrition & Chronic Disease Prevention is responsible for the following programs:
Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) improves the lifelong health and nutrition of pregnant women, new mothers (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding), infants, and children under the age of 5, by providing nutrition education, nutrient-rich supplemental food, and health and social service referrals.Raising Healthy Children Curriculum is offered to WIC families at risk for childhood obesity.

Breastfeeding Education and Support Program
Breastfeeding promotion and support is an integral part of nutrition services. The program strives to increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding among women. The program provides:

- Loan of Electric Breast pumps

Diabetes Education: Managing Life with Diabetes
Have you been diagnosed with Diabetes? Would you like to learn what to eat? How much to eat? How to purchase and prepare your meals? Our division offers Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) Workshop. This year, give yourself the gift of health! Come learn how to better control your diabetes and eat Healthy but tasty! Tobacco use is the most preventable method of death!
Our Tobacco Prevention Program goal is to make the greater Jacksonville area tobacco free. Tobacco use may lead to health problems such as COPD, Asthma, Emphysema, cancer, heart disease, circulation problems and death. We are seeking schools, students and volunteers interested in advocates by getting the word out against Tobacco use. Shape Up Jacksonville Community Nutrition Classes
The goals of the 4 classes Shape up Jacksonville (SUJ) series are to increase awareness of the impact obesity has on adult’s life and how it directly correlates to the development and complications of Chronic Disease. Hearts N Motion: A Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention Education
Hearts N Motion is a 4 session education program targeting adults. Our goal is to teach the signs and symptoms of heart of attack and signs and symptoms of a stroke; hypertension prevention; know your numbers & physical activity; and healthy heart eating & weight control / prescription medication & your meals.

Pasco County Dietetic Internship Program
Department of Health employees classified as Nutrition Educators may qualify as a candidate for the Pasco County Dietetic Internship Program (The Department of Health’s State Dietetic Internship Program). Interested Nutrition Educators must have been employed with the Department of Health for at least 2 years to qualify in Duval County. Invitations are extended to Nutrition Educators meeting the screening qualifications and have received the final approval from the Director of the Division of Nutrition & Chronic Diseases Prevention. Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Individual Nutrition Counseling
Do you need help learning what to eat? Do you have a new medical diagnosis that requires you to change your eating habits? You may need Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Medical Nutrition Therapy is individualizing nutrition counseling conducted by Registered Dietitians (RD). Your private physician will refer you to a Registered Dietitian for you to learn how you can improve your health. You will learn nutrition lifestyle changes. The purpose of MNT is to educate the individual or family on nutrition modifications for their specific health needs; such as diabetes, weight management, HIV, high cholesterol, and hypertension. Our RDs provide initial counseling and follow up visits. We have RDs at all of WIC sites to educate you on all of your nutritional needs. Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)
Assisted Living Facilities, Adult Day Cares and Group Homes provide quality meals and follow nutrition standards for their residents. Registered Dietitians from the Division of Nutrition & Chronic Disease Prevention using the Agency on Healthcare Administration (AHCA) nutrition standards, provides community nutrition classes to administrators and staff of the facilities to meet AHCA standards. Our RDs conduct 2 hour training on each of the following subjects:

- It Ain’t Home Cooking
- Menu Planning
- Elderly Nutrition
Trainings locations are Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, Gainesville, New Smyrna Beach and Tallahassee, Florida.
