Disease Detectives
Like investigators at the scene of a crime, disease detectives begin by looking for clues. They systematically gather information about what happened-
Who is sick? What are their symptoms? When did they get sick? Where could they have been exposed to the illness?
Using statistical analysis, investigators study the answers to these questions to find out how a particular health problem was introduced into a community. Disease detectives then use what they've learned to prevent further illness.

Information for People Recently Diagnosed with an Infectious Disease


Stomach or Bowel Problems
Salmonella
, Shigella, Giardia, E. Coli, Cryptosporidiosis, Campylobacter
and Norovirus are common causes of gastrointestinal illness. Consult your physician. Consider giving a stool specimen to test for bacteria, parasites and viruses.

Sore Throats, Coughs, Colds and Breathing Problems
Streptococcus Pneumoniae
, Pertussis (whooping cough) and "The Flu" are common causes of respiratory illness.
 


MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus)
MRSA is a common infection of the skin and can cause serious infections in other parts of the body. See your physician if you think you may have this infection. Cultures of the infected area will help determine the correct treatment. CDC MRSA Information Page


Preventing Disease
