Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Celebrating 10 years of engagement to raise awareness and reduce childhood obesity.
Stories from the Field
Since 2001, business, nonprofit and health care organizations have been united in addressing the growing epidemic of childhood obesity in Jacksonville. Understanding that obesity is a complex health issue with multiple root causes, the Coalition has developed a holistic community approach to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in Duval County. Building on the 2009 Healthy Kids, Healthy Jacksonville: A Community Call to Action To Reduce Childhood Obesity, a report that represents the collective efforts of more than 100 HJCOPC partners, the Call to Action provides an in-depth look at the issue, defines priority actions and steps to be taken to reduce—and ultimately reverse—the trend of childhood obesity.
The initiatives set forth in the Call to Action continue to serve as the framework for improving the health of our community and our children. Today, grant recipients and Coalition partners are making significant strides to reverse the trend of obesity in our youth. Children are gaining greater access to healthy food, living active lifestyles, receiving proper nutrition from birth and much more.
“We are proud to recognize the work of the Coalition through the Embrace A Healthy Florida grant program,” said Susan Towler, Vice President of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation. “The grant recipients are providing innovative resources, that will have a lasting effect in helping our youth become strong healthy adults.”
