Community Nutrition

The Division of Community Nutrition develops and implements programs to enhance dietary patterns of the public. The goal of Community Nutrition is to maximizes food and nutrition resources for the purpose of improving the health of Jacksonville residents, with special emphasis on high-risk and disadvantaged populations. Good nutrition is essential to maintaining healthy bodies. The Community Nutrition Services Division (CNS) is responsible for the following programs:


Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) improves the lifelong health and nutrition of pregnant women, new mothers (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding), infants, and children by providing nutrition education, nutrient-rich supplemental food, and health and social service referrals.

Breastfeeding Education and Support Program

Breastfeeding promotion and support is an integral part of nutrition services.  The program strives to increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding among women. The program provides:

Obesity Prevention Program

The goals of the Obesity Prevention Program program are to increase awareness of the impact obesity has on an individual’s life and how it is directly correlated to the development and complications of chronic diseases. The objectives of the program are to develop, evaluate, and implement obesity prevention programs throughout Duval County.   

Programs and Projects developed and implemented under the Obesity Prevention Program are:

  • GET Healthy Kids Club 

  • Raising Healthy Children Program

  • Shape UP Jacksonville Walking Club

  • Physician Training Program on Obesity Evaluation & Treatment Program
